Physically challenged persons donate blood
The voluntary blood donation by many physically challenged persons was the cynosure at the special camp held here on Tuesday.
Marking the World Blood Donor Day, Collector U. Sagayam flagged off a mobile unit to promote blood donation.
The mobile unit, which comprises a counsellor, lab technician among others would cover many southern districts including Virudhunagar, Ramanathapuram, Tirunelveli and Tuticorin. The unit would organise camps between 10 a.m and 1.30 p.m. and disseminate about the nuances of blood donation to the masses in the afternoons.
The World Blood Donor Day is observed on June 14 and it is an opportunity to encourage more people to become regular blood donors and thank the voluntary donors for their yeomen service in donating blood without any reward, said E.S. Thangha Paandian, programme manager, District Aids Prevention and Control Unit.
The blood units received from the donors undergoes compulsory testing for various infections including HIV, VDRL, Hepatitis B and C and malaria.
In Madurai district, there are two government blood banks and 11 private blood banks.
Last year, 8,733 units of blood were collected through 153 blood donation camps.
In association with Uthiram, a forum that was launched last year, the camp was organised, a press release stated
